In continuation of my secret despatch of the 6th of March, 1930, I have the honour to

inform Your Lordship that during the last month

the political situation locally has been over-

shadowed by happenings in the North where it has

been difficult to follow the exact course of

events. Throughout the month the flow of

recriminations has continued and there have been

the usual manoeuvres by all parties to obtain the

support of popular opinion before descending to

open hostilities.

2. Up to the present no fighting of any

consequence has taken place.

3. It now appears that General Yen Hsi-shan's

much bruited preparations to go abroad were not

intended to be carried into effect. At the time

of writing it is understood that in the event of
